family therapy
When you’re stuck in the same fight, drifting from your teen, or caught in family tension, something has to shift. I help couples, families, and parents get clear, break old patterns, and reconnect.
I work with Couples, Families, Parents, and Adult Siblings who care deeply about each other but keep getting stuck in patterns of Conflict, Silence, and Disconnection. Using a supportive, practical approach grounded in Emotionally Focused Therapy and attachment science, my job is to help you understand the cycle you’re in and start creating a new one.
Parenting a teenager can feel like walking a tightrope—between giving space and staying close, setting limits and staying calm. I help parents of teens understand the emotional needs beneath their child’s behavior, so they can respond with clarity, empathy, and boundaries that actually work.
These sessions are not family therapy. They’re for you—as a parent—to think out loud, reflect, and get expert guidance from someone who understands adolescent development, family systems, and what it means to parent with emotional attunement.
Whether you’re on the brink of separation or just caught in the same exhausting loop, couples therapy can help you find your way back to each other. I work with couples at all stages—from premarital and new parents to long-term partners navigating years of tension. You might be fighting constantly, avoiding each other, or walking on eggshells. Whatever your pattern, I’ll help you understand what’s underneath it, and how to shift it.
Old roles, unresolved hurt, long silences—it’s hard to change family dynamics, especially in adulthood. But it’s possible. I work with adult siblings, parents and adult children, and multi-generational families who want to repair their relationships and communicate in a new way.
Whether there’s estrangement, tension, or a pattern that’s never really been addressed, I create a space where everyone can slow down, feel heard, and work toward something more honest and respectful.
I specialize in couples therapy, family therapy, and parent consultation for teens. I help people get unstuck in their closest relationships—whether you’re partners, parents, adult siblings, or a parent and teen trying to find your way back to each other.
Clients often tell me I “got it” quickly—that I understood them fast, sometimes faster than they expected. I’m warm, empathic, and collaborative. I also shoot straight, and I won’t tiptoe around the truth. I often laugh with my clients. I also hold the hard stuff with patience and care.
I draw from Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), the Gottman Method, psychodynamic theory, and attachment science. These models are evidence-based and deeply effective. They help clients understand themselves and each other more clearly, and they offer real tools you can use outside of session.
I work especially well with emotionally intelligent, high-achieving people—those who succeed in many areas of life but feel lost when it comes to their closest relationships. You might come in with strong emotional walls, but if you’re open, ready, and willing to be challenged with care, we’ll likely do good work together.
My fee is $225 per 50-minute session for couples, families, and parent consultation work. If we find that longer sessions are needed, we can adjust the length and fee accordingly as we go.
I’m not in-network with any insurance companies, but I can provide you with a superbill—a detailed receipt you can submit to your insurance provider for possible reimbursement through your out-of-network benefits. Not sure if your plan offers that? Call the number on the back of your insurance card and ask about reimbursement for ‘out-of-network mental health services.’
I offer both in-person and telehealth sessions. I see clients virtually across the state of Texas, providing flexibility and convenience while maintaining the same quality of care.
I offer a free 15-minute phone consultation to see if we’re a good fit. You can email me at dr.nina@ninacalmensonphd.com, call me at 972-674-9044, or reach out through my contact form to schedule.
I ask for at least 24 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or reschedule a session. If you cancel with less than 24 hours’ notice or don’t show up for your appointment, the full session fee will be charged.
No—I specialize in relational work. I see couples, families, and parents, but not individual clients.
I don’t work directly with young children, but I do work with parents to support their child’s emotional and developmental needs. I primarily work with teens, parents, and adult family members.
That’s okay—and it’s very common. Therapy can still be effective even if not everyone is ready to participate at first. We can begin with whoever is willing. Often, when one person starts to shift, the dynamic begins to shift too.
I offer a free 15-minute phone consultation so we can see if we’re a good fit. Whether you’re ready to schedule or just have a few questions, feel free to reach out.
